Design Consultation: Express Bubble Sleeve Top

30 Mar

Hello, friends! I have another request from Shannon for an outfit idea for an Express top she recently purchased. I’ve seen a lot of flare looks this Spring, so I decided to go that route. Plus, I don’t currently own any flare jeans, so this idea stretches me a bit too. The fedora is once again, something I love, love, love. It wasn’t on my earlier Spring Wish List, but it is now!

Let me know if you are looking for some specific outfit ideas—I’d love to see what I can find to help!

P.S. Sorry the jeans are a bit pricey—I really wanted a dark wash because it helps make it universally flattering, and it was hard to find!

Top (Express): $29.90 (Buy One, Get One Half Off)

Flare Jeans (ASOS): $43.03

Necklace (Fossil): $25.00

Fedora (Urban Outfitters): $24.00

Shoes (Target): $29.99

Bracelet (Target): $16.99

TOTAL: $168.91

(I admit, I went for a specific look this time, so it’s more expensive than normal!)

Finally…the Results!

28 Mar

A week later, I’m finally posting what I wore to the Groundbreaking!  A quick recap of the options:

Again, thanks for the votes–since it was a tie, I still ended up making the decision. This ended up being a bit more complicated for a number of reasons:

  1. The patterned dress wasn’t available at Kohl’s. (I did order it, but not in time!)
  2. The solid black dress at Target required alterations. (I need to remember that A-line is my friend when it comes to alterations.)
  3. The pattered sweater was not as pretty in person…in fact, it looked somewhat low quality.
  4. The red earrings were at Kohl’s (yea!) but looked ginormous on my little ears (bummer!)

Thus, modifications were made, but I think it turned out well. I found another black dress at Target (on clearance even!). It has cap sleeves, and since it was such a warm day last Monday, I didn’t even need the sweater. Plus, I re-mixed it for church yesterday, and husband told me he really liked it. Which, let’s face it, is really icing on the cake…and the cake.

Dress (Target), Shoes (DSW – Similar), Necklace (Kohl’s),

Earrings (Kohl’s), Bracelet (Gift – Similar)

The local stray decided that this was an opportune time to say hello.

The Re-Mix

Re-mix: Dress (Target), Sweater (Old Navy – Similar), Shoes (Palladium—although I did NOT spend this much on them), Tights (Kohl’s), Necklace (Dunno – Similar), Earrings (Gift – Similar)

P.S. The patterned dress arrived yesterday, and I really like it too! Turns out it has a lot of blue in it, which I didn’t see online but was a pleasant surprise. So I guess both sides won since I’m sure I’ll wear it soon too.

Search for a New Laptop Bag

25 Mar

Okay, friends. I’m posting a bit late today. My lovely vehicle decided to stop working yesterday evening while out running errands after work. It could have been much worse, but all said and done, I got home from work after 10 pm. A special shout out to my friend, Jennifer, who let me borrow her Jeep today to get to work. My car is now fixed, and I am now $350 poorer, but at least I have a way to get to work again on Monday! And for your sanity, I won’t even go into how much we spent on John’s car today getting it fixed too. Let’s just say that if today were a shopping spree, I’d be wearing designer clothing and holding the lovely bag below.

Now moving on to the lovely bag below. I recently got a new laptop at work (yea!), and it no longer fits in my laptop bag (boo!). So in looking for a new bag, I also learned that finding laptop bags that fit larger than 15” laptops is difficult. It could also be that I’m looking for something a bit more stylish than a backpack, in which case, there are plenty of options. The way I see it, I’m toting this bag around everyday and should give it the same attention I do a purse. So tonight I’m dreaming that this bag wasn’t so expensive and that it fit a 17” laptop. Perhaps tomorrow I’ll continue my search to find the perfect bag!  Happy Friday everyone!

Bid Day

23 Mar

Today was a crazy day at work. Let’s just say that my phone wouldn’t stop ringing from what seemed like a bazillion different people…and some of the same people calling me over and over with questions. I knew this in advance (bids were due today!) and decided today was a day for flats and no fuss. So here’s what I came up with–you may notice that I am pretty much sans jewelry. In my defense, I broke my necklace right before I left for work (you know, and already late!). I think a white watch would look great with this, though, so I’ll be keeping my eyes open for something like this or perhaps more in my price range, this.

Hope you enjoy the random photos of one of my kitties, Izzy. We play a game where I “pretend” to sneak up on her. It’s quite entertaining for both of us.

Mockup: Socks and Heels

21 Mar

A tie…really, guys?  A tie?!  Thanks for your votes this past weekend on what I should wear to the groundbreaking today.  Alas, it was a tie, so I still ended up making the final decision.  I’ll post some photos later this week, so you can see what I chose!

Moving on…do you remember this post?  I picked up a couple pairs of socks this weekend and decided to try out the ‘socks and heels’ for church on Sunday.  I was pleasantly surprised with the results.  Admittedly, this is a pretty basic outfit, but I’m notoriously late to church on Sundays, so I was proud that I actually got the socks in at all.  Let me know what you think of it—would you try it?

(Dress: Gap – similar, Sweater: Old Navy – similar, Shoes: MIA, Socks: Kohl’s)

Oh, and last but not least, I wanted to show you a picture of my Saturday morning.  It was a morning of paintballing—fun and intense.  Nothing wakes you up quite like paintballs hurling at you at 200 mph. I even had to photoshop one of the welts out of the Sunday morning photos.

Groundbreaking – Time to VOTE!

18 Mar

Are you guys ready to give me some much needed input?! I hope so! I’ve transitioned to a new construction project, and Monday is the groundbreaking. Truth be told, I don’t normally attend these, so I’m looking forward to the opportunity! And as you may know, I don’t have many opportunities to wear a dress to work…so I’m taking it! (And, for once, I’m NOT the person in the bright orange safety vest!) Now this is where you come in—I’ve decided to get a new dress because my current wardrobe does not contain much in the “work approved” dress category. I’d like something timeless since I won’t get many opportunities to wear it. AND, I want you to decide which outfit you like better!

Sole Sourced: Kohl's (This One's For You, Mom!)

16 Mar

So I got to thinking that my mom’s pretty great (okay, really great!), and she asked me a few weeks ago for outfit ideas that go with a black blazer and jeans. I haven’t featured it yet, mostly because there are just so many ways to work with a black blazer and jeans, and I needed a bit of inspiration. I got to thinking about it last night, and decided to go with something that’s both trendy and classic, just like my mom. I’ve owned a similar variation of this outfit for a few years, and I love it every time I wear it. I love seeing the slightly longer length of a tunic beneath a blazer. The tunic can be seen from all angles, making you look as good from the back as you do from the front! So enjoy and let me know how YOU wear a blazer with jeans!

Black Blazer (Kohl’s): $34.99

Jeans (Kohl’s): $32.99 (But let’s be honest, do you really NEED another pair of jeans?)

Floral Tunic (Kohl’s): $19.99

Peep Toe Flats (Kohl’s): $18.99

Bracelet (Kohl’s): $7.80

Beaded Necklace (Kohl’s): $13.00

TOTAL: $127.76 ($94.77 if you ditch the jeans for a pair already in your closet!)

Design Consultation: Spring Flats

14 Mar

A friend from Michigan, Kyle, recently sent me this question:

Fav flats? It will soon enough be warm/not to much melty snow outside in Michigan for flats. I’m dying for a few nice pairs… any suggestions? I feel like all ballet flat type shoes get destroyed when you were them.”

I could not agree more! I love the look of ballet flats, but they often have very thin soles and material, leaving me with pants that drag on the ground and feet that feel every rock and pebble around. I wear flats every day to work, so I’m always on the lookout for cute, high quality flats. I watch for flats that have good soles with some interesting details, whether it be bright colors, patent leather, buckles, buttons or ruffles. Unfortunately, this type of selection process does narrow the field by quite a bit and raise the asking price. However, I’ve found that it’s been worth it, considering I’m wearing them all day, every day. That’s more than I can say for a lot of my heels, and I’ve spent a lot more on those in the past. Anyway, here are some suggestions for some flats that I’ve loving right now.

#1 Sihlouettes: $20

#2 DSW (Rock & Candy): $29.95

#3 Target (Merona): $19.99

#4 DSW (Nickels): $29.95

#5 DSW (Born): $49.95 (Also comes in bright yellow!)

#6 Endless (LifeStride): $48.95

#7 Endless (ECCO): $57.50

Casual Friday

11 Mar

Or should I say Thursday? I wore this yesterday…it’s been a long week, and I was already ready for something low key by Thursday! That’s what happens when you stare at a set of contract drawings for hours on end.  I’m getting ready for an exciting weekend…one night out dancing with the girls, and an afternoon with the husband pretending to be art snobs at the Kimbell Art Museum. Can it get any better than that?

But what I really wanted to talk to you about was a new type of post I’m going to start next week. Do you have a style or type of clothing / accessory that you’re just not QUITE ready to try out? Well, let me be your mock-up! My sister mentioned that she was browsing a colleague’s photography blog and ran across this photo in the midst of this post (and this one!). She really likes the idea of pairing short ruffle socks with heels. I’ve also seen the ‘socks and heels’ (yeah, that’s the technical term) trend in a number of place, so be on the look out, because I’ll be trying this out for you!

1 – J.Crew

2 – Banana Republic

3 – ASOS

4 – Urban Outfitters
