Sole Sourced: Target Go BRIGHT!

30 May

First off, Happy Memorial Day!  A special thanks to those who have served out country, including my grandpa, my brothers, an uncle, cousins, and many friends.  Your service is incredible, and I am so humbled by the sacrifices that you and your families have made in service to our country.

Moving on to today’s outfit selection.  It’s summer in Texas now (hello 90+ temps every day!), and for some reason, that makes me want to wear bright colors.  Bright doesn’t mean it can’t be versatile though.   Switch out the skirt for some white pants, or switch out the top for a white, black, chambray top and off you go!

There just so happens to be a Target right down the street, and since today concludes a fabulous 3 day weekend, I think I’ll head over and check this outfit out.

Each item is from Target!

Top: $22.99

Skirt: $29.99

Shoes: $24.99 (they come in lots of colors!)

Watch: $12.99

Bracelet: $19.99 (In Stores Only—A bit pricey for a bracelet, but it looks so comfy and would go with everything!)

Earrings: $9.99

TOTAL: $120.94

FBFF: Hair Philosophy

26 May

Let’s start things off with a trip down memory lane over the last 10-ish years.

So now that you can tell I like to change my hair style, I’d like to share why:

IT’S JUST HAIR.

IT WILL GROW BACK.

Maybe you disagree, but I figure that if I change my clothes everyday, I may as well change my hair style at least a few times a year.

1.      How often do you get your hair cut?

I’m no poster child in this regard.  I cut it when I don’t like what it looks like.  Sometimes this is 6 weeks.  Other times, it’s 4 months.

2.      Do you go to the same stylist each time, try someone new, go to the cheap hair cutting chains or live it up in a salon?

I’m always trying to find the best deal, so I don’t usually stay with the same person.  If I’m having a “major” style change, I’ll usually pick one of my favorites.  I do like salons better than the cheap chains, but to each their own!  (Again, it’s just hair!)

3.      Do you color your hair? How often? What’s your natural color?

I love, love, love to color and highlight my hair.  Problem is, I have thick hair and it costs a fortune!  So I try to limit it to a few times a year, max.  Most of the time it’s similar to my natural color so that it stays low maintenance.  That way it doesn’t completely blow out the budget for the year!

4.      The one thing you always do to keep your hair looking great is:

Have the stylist cut it so that there is a minimal amount of work on it to make it look good.  I can handle a blow dryer, but a curling iron?  Only for special occasions.  Apparently, this has kept it really healthy.  I had an Awesome / Awkward moment (channeling Sydney from the Daybook!) at the salon a couple months ago when the 2 guys working on my hair kept running their hands through it telling me how soft and silky it is.  Um, thanks?  Now could you stop touching my head like that?

5.      What hair trend do you love and wish you could rock?

I really like the classic California beach look—long, wavy, blond. It’s so classic!  Thus, I’ve been wanting to get a wave perm for a long time.  You don’t have to call me crazy—the look on my stylist’s face already did.  I suppose you always want what you don’t have, but that’s not stopping me!  I’m still going to do it!  (once I grow my hair out…which takes FOREVER!)

Now go check out ModlyChic for the rest of the FBFF!

Stormy Weather

25 May

Since my posting plans for last night turned into rounding up the kitties, a futon, and the weather radio to hunker down in the bathroom during the stormy weather, I’d like to instead simply share this with you.  I stumbled upon a (mostly) flat version of my favorite wedges yesterday!  Now if only I could find them in black…

Bloggers Do It Better: Ready for (Prep) School

20 May

It’s almost summer, but I’m pretty sure I’m ready to go back to school. Prep school, that is. I’m a public school gal, but I think I could get used to this look. The very lovely (and smart!) Kristina from Pretty, Shiny, Sparkly offered up her “Bloggers Do It Better” challenge with the prep school look. I do admit I was a bit apprehensive about this look since no one in my office wears a tie. Once I tried a few options, though, I was sold. Loved it! Not an everyday event, but was definitely worth it for a change of pace! Plus, now I feel like I have a bigger wardrobe since apparently I can raid husband’s side of the closet for inspiration. So what do YOU think? Have you ever worn something that belongs to your husband / boyfriend / brother / dad?

P.S. Dad, you have a way better selection of ties than John. So watch out next time I’m in town!

P.P.S. I so wish I had THIS watch to wear with this outfit!  Note to self:  Wear more accessories!

Re-Engineered: Anthro Chop Chop Outfit

18 May

I have to admit, when I saw this outfit at Anthro, I swooned. Pattern mixing and bright colors make it a great eclectic look. I decided to use it as a loose inspiration….I stress loose since, let’s face it, Anthro has some one of kind patterns and unique colors. Plus, I wanted to give it my own take. So, what do you think? Are you jumping on the bandwagon of pattern mixing?

 Anthro Chop-Chop Outfit (Total: $237.95)

Skirt (Forever 21): $14.90

Shirt (Old Navy): $11.99

Belt (Forever 21): $6.80

Shoes (Target): $29.99

TOTAL: $63.68

Weekend at the Ranch

16 May

John and I were introduced to a REAL Texas ranch this weekend. We celebrated a friend’s 30th birthday with barbeque, a bonfire, and some great music. It reminded me that I really need to get some cowboy boots, and maybe even a hat to top it off. John is not so excited about those prospects…but come on, we’ve been here 4 years!

Here’s a glimpse of my casual Friday look.  Am I the only one who thinks that skinny jeans feel like sweatpants? I love them, especially to kick off a relaxing and fun weekend. What’s your go-to casual look?

FBFF: Outside Influences

13 May

I need to remind myself to stop and smell the fake flowers.

(Pants: Target-similar, Shirt: Old Navy, Flower Pin: Kohl’s-similar, Sweater: Old Navy-similar, Shoes: DSW, Glasses: For Real. I really wear glasses.)

Yesterday I couldn’t help but wish I had a maid. And if it’s not too much to ask, a cook and personal assistant. Days like this I can’t imagine what we’ll do when there are kids running around! Maybe by then I’ll learn to embrace the chaos of my life…I hope.

I’m looking forward to reading the other responses to this week’s FBFF (Fashion Beauty Friend Friday)…mostly because my responses are pretty lame and I need your inspiration!

What magazines do you subscribe to?

Wait, do you mean subscribe to or actually read? Collecting piles of magazines just happens to be one of my most endearing habits to husband. I’ve been getting better though, and I think I’m down to Runner’s World and Fitness right now…and maybe Better Homes and Garden? I think that last one was a gift from mom. At the moment, I have not been running or working out, and my house is a mess. Maybe I SHOULD read them? I have enjoyed InStyle in the past, and I’ve been known to check People.com several times a day.

Do you watch any fashion TV shows?

Nope. I look for fashion in normal shows, though. I’ve been known to shout out–”Hey! I have a shirt like that!” I also comment incessantly on what Lily and Robin wear in How I Met Your Mother.

Beyond blogs, what websites do you frequent for fashion inspiration?

Usually I just check the lookbooks from different stores. Anthro, J.Crew, and LOFT are current favorites.

Advertisements play a huge role in forming public opinion about a product or brand…what ads do you like and why?

I don’t watch commercials (thank you DVR!), but in general I like quirky and realistic advertisements. For instance, the commercials for cotton are great, and Dove’s ‘Real Beauty’ campaign is encouraging too.

Do you own any fashion books?

Nope. Zero. Zilch. Does that count against me? I’m still searching for a place to store my scrapbook albums, so I’m not sure where I would put a fashion book!

Everybody, Everywear: Florals

10 May

Random question of the day: Do you close your eyes when you sneeze? I do. Does everyone? I ask this because with all these allergies, I often sneeze on my drive home…and subsequently close my eyes for a split second while driving. I know I’m crazy, but it makes me nervous because I drive with other crazy Texas drivers on very busy freeways! Anyway, I assumed everyone closed their eyes when sneezing, but then I remembered that my soccer coach always called me out on closing my eyes when heading a ball—apparently not everyone does that! So now it’s got me wondering…

Anyway, I decided to join in this month’s Everybody, Everywear. I picked up this floral shirt for a steal at Banana Republic. It’s ended up being a great purchase. I’ve been able to remix it in several ways already. Enough about that, check out how everyone else is wearing it at Everybody, Everywear!

Weekend Window Shopping: Anthropologie

9 May

Happy Mother’s Day to all the moms out there! I was fortunate to have my mom in town for this Mother’s Day. It was great to get the opportunity to spend the day with her, bumming around town having Sonic snacks and walking in the park. It’s hard living far from family, so I sure love it when they come to visit!

I haven’t done any shopping for awhile (so busy with home improvements!), so I decided to do a bit of window shopping at Anthropologie instead. I pretty much stick to their sale section, considering it’s all I can afford and / or justify. These are my current favorites…full of stripes, flowers, and flowing shapes. What are your window shopping favorites right now?

1 – Translucent Dolman Tee ($19.95)

 2 – Endless Horizons Top ($29.95)

 3 – Full Flourish Cardigan ($29.95)

 4 – Visionary Skirt ($19.95)

 5 – Paperbag Knit Crops ($29.95)

6 – Triumvirate Belts ($29.95) Three belts for the price of one?! Yes, please!

7 – Stacked Window Wedges ($229.95) Okay, fine. Still out of my price range. A girl can dream, right?

 8 – Curiosity Shop Necklace ($29.95)

 9 – Cloudscape Socks ($4.95)

Fashion Beauty Friend Friday: Shoes!

5 May

Two posts in one week about shoes? For those of you who have seen my closet, this is no surprise. But really, it’s because I’ve joined a lovely group started by Katy Rose @ Modly Chic that gives bloggers a chance to all comment on the same subject every Friday. This Friday happens to be on shoes, so without further ado:

1.What is your go-to pair of shoes?

Wedges. I’ve said it once, and I’ll say it a dozen more times. Wedges are SO comfortable! My current go-to wedge right now is this lovely lady from DSW. I love the neutral color and the cut-outs give it a little edge.

2. What goes into your shoe buying decisions?

I never thought about this question until shopping with a friend a few weeks ago. We started discussing shoes, and she mentioned that she only buys neutral colors (black, brown, tan) so they will match every outfit. That made me realize that I actually go about my decision making in the opposite manner. I try to buy shoes in every color of the rainbow. I’m drawn to bold colors and unusual patterns. (Yes, I see the irony in this comment considering my answer to Question 1—I guess it’s the cut-outs that got me) I love heels, but my job requires me to wear flats, so I try to take this into account when shopping too. It’s smarter for me to buy flats since I’ll get so much more use out of them. Admittedly, not as fun though!

3. The majority of the shoes in your closet are what color?

There really isn’t a dominant color. I suppose I have a few black and brown basic flats, but for the most part, there is a lot of variety. I think that shoes can really set off an outfit, and I often pay more attention to them that I do my jewlery.

4. When it comes to designer shoes what are your favorite brands and why?

For the most part, I don’t pay attention to brands. For truly functional everyday shoes (I work in a construction office, so they HAVE to be practical!), I’d had great luck with ECCO and Merrell. They stand up well and are super comfortable. I’m brand loyal in running shoes too (Go Mizuno!), but other than that, doesn’t matter to me.

5. If price wasn’t an issue, you’d own which shoe?

Oh, Christian Louboutin, why do you make your shoes so far out of reach? I don’t know why, but those red bottoms get me every time! I’ve told husband that someday, a pair of those will reside in my closet…daydreams for now!

This has been fun!  Looking forward to seeing everyone else’s responses too!  Have a great weekend!
