Re-Engineered: J.Crew

30 Sep

When I ran across J.Crew’s Fall Looks recently (I mean, come on–they are having a 30% off sale!!), I saw Look #12 and swooned.  Okay, so maybe a poncho is really a fad, completely impractical for my lifestyle, and $198…but STILL…I swooned.  So when I saw one at Target for $25, I knew it meant I needed to re-create the rest of the J.Crew look for myself (and you!).  Oh, and talk about a classy way to bring in an animal print.  Look out world.  You may be seeing this girl wearing ponchos and leopard print accessories this fall.  Now I just need to wait for it to cool down out there!  It hit 100 degrees yesterday, so it may be awhile!

JCrew Look #12 ($930)

Poncho (Target): $24.99

Jeans (Target): $24.99 (They are currently out of stock but got GREAT reviews)

White Shirt (Target): $19.99

Boots (Target): $34.99

Clutch (Target): $9.99

TOTAL: $114.95

Re-Engineered: Fossil Fall Style

21 Sep

Last weekend it cooled off a bit, and I couldn’t help but notice several women out-and-about with cuffed jeans.  I love how it looked on them (all shapes and sizes!) and it’s now on my fall wish list.  Length is key with cuffed jeans—you need them loose enough at the bottom to adjust the length with the cuff, but tight enough at the bottom that they don’t look like a surfer roll.  My quest begins.

Now, I also ran across Fossil’s latest look book (love, love, love everything they are doing lately), and found a look with both cuffed jeans AND oxford heels (also on my fall wish list!).  Without further ado, I give you my own take on their lovely, classic look for fall.  I love the modern twist with the oxfords and socks—definitely trying that this year!

Oh, and if I had to pick one item to pay full price for, it would be the shoes…or maybe the watch.   Love them both, and they’d last forever!

Fossil Fall Look Book (TOTAL Cost: $399)

Jeans (Forever 21): $27.80

Shirt (Express): $29.99

Shoes (Target): $29.99

Watch (Style & Co via Macy’s): $29.98

Socks (TopShop):  $8.00

TOTAL Cost: $125.76

Re-Engineered: Fossil

I don’t know about you, but I am currently drooling over Fossil’s lookbook.  The knee high socks / boots, brightly colored tights, and mix of feminine details within structured styles are right up my alley.  It’s giving me a lot of inspiration for this fall when I can actually wear tights and knee high boots again!  So to combat the current 100+ degree days that I will be battling for the next couple months, here’s what I’m dreaming about:

Total Cost Excluding Watch: $292

I came up with a couple interpretations of this outfit (depending on how daring you want to be!) so I hope you are inspired as well.  If I were to splurge on one of the Fossil items, it would be the shoes.  Oh, the shoes.  They are so lovely.  But I know you’re not all as crazy about shoes as I am, so I’ll give you alternatives that are a bit less expensive.

Look #1

Abstract Dress (F21): $24.80

Sweater (J.Crew): $29.99

Tights (Bare Necessities): $13.50

Ankle Boots (Blowfish): $39.00

 TOTAL: $110.09

Ankle Bootie (Me Too – DSW): $34.94

Gold Necklace (F21): $2.80

What do you think?  Would you wear this style?  What’s your favorite look from the Fossil lookbook?  I’m planning to re-engineer a few more outfits, so I’d love to hear your input!

Re-Engineered: Gap White Jeans

8 Jun

Has anyone been able to find white jeans somewhere OTHER than Gap? I haven’t! So while I don’t like the almost $60 price tag, I do believe that Gap has good, quality jeans with the market cornered on white jeans. I still wouldn’t pay $60 because they constantly have sales, so I doubt anybody is paying full price (and if you are, STOP!).

All that rambling aside, I decided to “Re-Engineer” a Gap outfit around their white jeans. It reduces the cost by a third AND includes a gold watch.  What do you think? This is such a simple, versatile look that I know you could rock. P.S. I actually like the AE top better…a tie that resembles a scarf but without the heat? Um, yes please.

Gap Outfit TOTAL: $213.90 (Excluding Watch)

Halter Top (American Eagle): $24.50

White Jeans (Gap): $59.50

Yellow Belt (ASOS): $11.08

Gold Watch (Kohl’s): $16.99

Espadrilles (Target): $29.99

TOTAL: $142.06 (Including Watch!)

Re-Engineered: Anthro Chop Chop Outfit

18 May

I have to admit, when I saw this outfit at Anthro, I swooned. Pattern mixing and bright colors make it a great eclectic look. I decided to use it as a loose inspiration….I stress loose since, let’s face it, Anthro has some one of kind patterns and unique colors. Plus, I wanted to give it my own take. So, what do you think? Are you jumping on the bandwagon of pattern mixing?

 Anthro Chop-Chop Outfit (Total: $237.95)

Skirt (Forever 21): $14.90

Shirt (Old Navy): $11.99

Belt (Forever 21): $6.80

Shoes (Target): $29.99

TOTAL: $63.68

Re-Engineered: LOFT Shorts and Sequins

11 Apr

It was a hot 90 degrees here this weekend, and I actually broke out a pair of shorts on Saturday and Sunday. I surprised myself since I usually forgo shorts until the heat of July and August when they become imperative. Even then, I usually go for a skirt or dress instead of the dreaded shorts (Why do they have to squish your thighs out when you sit down?!). However, I spent the days out in the heat shopping and running errands and decided to go for it. Which brings me to today’s re-engineered outfit….shorts! I love this take on shorts by LOFT for a number of reasons—stripes liven up the shorts while managing to remain a versatile wardrobe piece, sequins (need I say more?), and a linen blazer dresses up the outfit while remaining cool and chic. So what do you think? Is this reason enough for you to wear shorts this summer? Do you already love shorts? How do you wear them? I need suggestions since I own so few!

LOFT ($306)

Linen Blazer (J.Jill): $24.99

Sequin Tank (Forever 21): $19.80

Striped Shorts (Forever 21): $17.80

Sandals (Target): $15.00

Bracelet (Kohl’s): $13.00

Necklace (Kohl’s): $13.00

TOTAL: $103.59

Re-Engineered: J.Crew

2 Mar

Today I’m feeling less sore and ready to run again (well, maybe not QUITE yet), but regardless, I think a couple more days of flats are in order to heal my feet! And you all are in luck, because I found this little beauty at J.Crew:

J.Crew (Look #4): $475

And you know what else? I couldn’t decide on just one outfit to match it, so I made two! The first selection includes the J.Crew blue sweatshirt as my key piece. I thought I would surely be able to find something similar for less, but alas, it was not the case. J.Crew really does have stunning colors for their clothing and it is difficult to find replications of the color elsewhere (for less money). As for the rest of the outfit, I somewhat selfishly chose the cropped pants from Target because they’re a bit shorter (which would end up being longer on me), and I would definitely need the J.Crew version hemmed so they wouldn’t be high water pants.

Sweatshirt (J.Crew): $59.50

White Shirt (Walmart): $6.00

Scarf (Kohl’s): $18.00

Pants (Target): $21.99

Shoes (Forever 21): $9.80

TOTAL: $115.29

So that’s a lot cheaper, right? Well, what if you like the style but still can’t bring yourself to pay almost $60 for a sweatshirt? No problem. How about we try something in purple and grey instead? The Express scarf is so gorgeous, so versatile, and really ties it all together. Did I mention it’s on sale? I do miss the floral shoes in this outfit, and I may be purchasing those anyway because they’re just so darn cute. Hope you enjoy and let me know which outfit you like better!

Sweatshirt (Target): $24.99

Purple Shirt (Walmart): $7.00

Scarf (Express): $20.93

Pants (Target): $21.99

Shoes (Forever 21): $9.80

Total: $84.71

P.S. I love the bright red lipstick on the J.Crew model. Maybe we should all try that out too?

Re-Engineered: Anthropologie “Habitat” Outfit

22 Feb

Okay, guys. I’m branching out. Technically, there’s no “key” piece in this re-engineered outfit. To be honest, I love the belt, but who wants to spend $38 on a green belt? Nevertheless, let’s move forward, because I love this Anthropologie outfit to pieces. And I really, really love the hat. Confession time—I’m a hat person. So now I have an excuse to buy a fedora. I don’t actually own a fedora yet, so here’s the perfect opportunity to go get one. Without further ado, here’s the original Anthro outfit:

Anthro “Habitat” Look (Total: $352 excluding shoes)

Here’s my less expensive version with an added pair of shoes, which are another obsession of mine. I wanted some espadrilles this summer, and Target just happened to oblige with a peep toe version. They come in several colors, and any color would work with this outfit, so just pick whatever works with the rest of your wardrobe. If you’ve read about me, then you know I couldn’t wear this outfit to work, but I figure a girl’s got to have a weekend, right? As always, I love you for commenting. Have a great Tuesday!

TOTAL: $148.37 (INCLUDING shoes!)

Dress (Kohl’s): $45

Sweater (Ann Taylor LOFT): $44.50—on sale for $33.38

Belt (Roxy): $16

Fedora (Nordstrom): $29

Shoes (Target): $24.99

Design Review: Ann Taylor LOFT

20 Feb

With all the sales going on for President’s Day, I decided to do a little shopping this afternoon. I stopped in at Ann Taylor LOFT to try on the cargo pants I suggested as a key piece in this post. Here are the realizations I came to while determining whether to purchase them:

Realization #1:

The model is at least 6′-8” tall because those pants make her legs look at least a mile long.

Realization #2:

I am 5′-4” tall and need to wear these closer to knee length so the proportions look right. For reference, these pants are a size 6 regular. They didn’t have them in petite or short at the store, but it didn’t really matter since I just rolled them up a bit more.

Realization #3:

I already have a white button up shirt, navy sweater, and peep toe pumps so that I could wear a similar version of the outfit with only the purchase of pants and belt. (I do like the striped sweater better, but we all have to live within our budget, right?!)

Realization #4:

I often end up liking the way pants look from the front but don’t like it from the side (anyone else have a booty like mine?) I was pleasantly surprised that these worked fairly well, especially with the sweater.

Realization #5:

These pants do not look good unrolled, BUT they do work with flats! Bonus points for versatility.

So did I purchase them?

I did, in fact, buy them at 25% off for around $45. I may hold on to them for a bit to see if they go on further sale, but I decided to take the plunge because I liked that they were comfortable, different than anything I already own, and versatile for the summer since I hate shorts (more on that later). For some of you (like me), splurging on pants is the way to go since they are much more difficult to find in a good fit.  As always, you can make my day by leaving a comment!  Hope that you have a wonderful week!

Re-engineered Style: Ann Taylor LOFT

8 Feb

Ann Taylor LOFT Look (Total: $237.50 excluding shoes):

I was browsing through Ann Taylor LOFT outfit ideas today and ran across this one. Oddly enough, I was drawn to the slim cargo pants because it’s a style I haven’t tried yet. I decided to make the cargo pants my key item since, in my opinion, pants are the most difficult piece to fit in a good fit and are versatile for outfits to come. Ideally, I would try these on in the store and wait for them to go on sale, but I figured I could recreate the rest of the outfit with less expensive items for the time being. It’s a weekend outfit, although all I would need to do to bring it into work would be to switch out the heels for some navy patent flats and wear the pants long instead of rolled up. (Because if I can’t wear it to work, what’s the point in spending so much money?!) I also took some liberties with the sweater and heels, but I think the general idea holds. Enjoy and let me know if you like it!

Pants (Ann Taylor LOFT): $59.50

Belt (Dillard’s): $17.00

Navy Flower (Etsy Shop – 4SistersCreations) $6.00

Shirt (Charlotte Russe): $15.49

Cardigan (Forever 21): $24.80

Shoes (Target): $29.99

Necklace (Target): $19.98

TOTAL: $172.76 (INCLUDING shoes!)
