A Cool Breeze

21 Oct

I’ve started to pull items from my winter clothes bins!  It’s funny how each season I’m pleasantly surprised when going through the bins I had so carefully packed up several months before.  I always forget about so many items!  Not that I’ve really started unpacking the bins…oh no, I always start by pawing through them for several weeks until I finally find a Saturday to switch everything out in the closet.  Anyway, this outfit isn’t any winter items–I decided I need to pull out a summer tee to get some more wear in before packing it away (you know, in several weeks when I get around to it).  Happy weekend!  I’ve got too many fun things planned to sit in my closet this weekend!

Brrrr!  It’s cold enough to wear a coat!!

The Search for Chambray

7 Oct

I’d like to share a little ‘first world problem’ I’ve been having the last few months (that’s the term John and I use to describe issues that are obviously only a concern because our lives are just fine).  Anyhow, I’ve been keeping my eyes open for awhile for a chambray shirt.  Now, they’re virtually everywhere, but for some reason, every one I found was way out of my price range or too light or too dark or had too much color variation–you get the point.  Months, people.  I’ve been looking for months.  However, last week while grocery shopping, I ran across this little number at Target.

Target ($22.99)

It’s pretty much everything I want except that I prefer a standard shirt collar.  However, the ruffles are cute so I made an exception and purchased it (and okay, this one too).  Then a couple days later, I found out J.Crew was having a sale on their sale items, and I ran across another chambray shirt…WITH a collar.

J.Crew ($98.00 –the one I found was around $37 on sale and a little darker in color, but this is the closest picture I could find)

So then I’m torn.  It’s more expensive than the Target version, but it does have the collar I want.  I decide to order it so I can try both on side by side.  It arrived a couple days ago and is perfect, so I’m leaning towards keeping it even though it’s an extra $15.  BUT, then I stumbled across yet another chambray shirt today at Old Navy.

Old Navy ($19.50)

It’s got all the attributes I want AND it’s the cheapest version.  So now I’m thinking to myself that I need to purchase this version and return the other two.  But what a pain.  Returns are such a pain.  See my dilemma, people?  First world problems, I tell ‘ya.  I go months with nothing, and now 3 options in a week.  So what’s your favorite–which one would you keep?  And please don’t tell me you found more for me to look at. 😉

Fashion Expansion: Pleats

21 Jul

You may remember that my summer wishlist included a pleated skirt.  I haven’t purchased it (yet), but I continue to be enamored by all things pleated.  I suppose it’s the girly-girl in me that swoons for flowy yet refined shapes.  So, for your enjoyment (and mine!), I thought I would give you some ideas on how to jump into this style…whether it be with allover pleats, or just a few tucks here and there.   Personally, I’ll probably stick to pleated skirts and dresses.  For those of us blessed with ample derrieres or hips, I’ve found that the pleated shorts have a tendency to draw attention to the area while flowy skirts or dresses will complement it.  How about you?  Have you jumped on the bandwagon, or are you sitting this one out?

It’s a Monday.

13 Jun

Happy Monday.  I wore this outfit last week to Lifegroup (aka Church Small Group).  We’re between studies at the moment, so John and I decided to use the evening as an opportunity for the group to get to know each other better (we happen to be the dictators leaders).  Turns out it was an opportunity for me to get to know John better.  We played a version of The Newlywed Game where you answers questions about your spouse.  I was asked “What piece of your clothing does your husband least like?”  Hmmmmm, I’m always SUPER fashionable (especially in my baggy sweatpants and tshirts), so I was at a loss.  John doesn’t always agree with my outfit selections, but to be honest, he’s not all that concerned about them.  So, I guessed…. “Skinny jeans?” figuring that they are a bit trendy and oh, I happen to be wearing them at the moment.  His response?  “Sometimes you wear big hair accessories and I don’t like them.”  Huh?  Did not see that one coming!  So now I will be nixing my idea to use the flower pin below as a hair pin.   I know you’re all terribly disappointed.

Hope you have a great week!  We just got our building permit for the new construction project I’m on (yea!!), so it should be an eventful week for me as we finally break ground!

Re-Engineered: Anthro Chop Chop Outfit

18 May

I have to admit, when I saw this outfit at Anthro, I swooned. Pattern mixing and bright colors make it a great eclectic look. I decided to use it as a loose inspiration….I stress loose since, let’s face it, Anthro has some one of kind patterns and unique colors. Plus, I wanted to give it my own take. So, what do you think? Are you jumping on the bandwagon of pattern mixing?

Shirt (Old Navy): $11.99

Sunshine and Wildflowers

23 Apr

Sometimes I wish I could have a yard full of wildflowers.  They are in full bloom right now and it is stunning.  It’s the one thing I enjoy about my hour+ drive every morning and evening.  The highways are lined with thousands of wildflowers, just asking me to stop and stare…you know, if I wasn’t driving.

I hope you all have a wonderful Easter weekend!  The Lord is risen!

Pattern Mixing

18 Apr

Sooooo, late last week I may or may not have made my husband sick with my cooking. Well, actually, I admit it, I’m pretty sure I did make him sick. See, the two of us aren’t big mayonnaise fans. We keep it in the fridge for one meal–chicken salad. Do you see where this is going? It was a busy night, so I made a quick chicken salad meal, ate it and put the leftovers in the fridge for John. Admittedly I felt a bit queasy later that night, but for me, a sensitive stomach is pretty standard. John had a little later that night and then another serving the following day for lunch…at which point, he was down for the count. And then I checked the expiration date on the mayonnaise. Oops. So let’s just say I get no Suzy Homemaker points for cooking this week. Poor guy. I don’t think we’ll be having mayonnaise for awhile.

Side note, I decided to mix patterns for this outfit. I’ve been seeing stripes and flowers worn together everywhere, and it’s inspiring me to mix more patterns together. Why not?! Creates some visual interest.

Lilies!

15 Apr

This past weekend, husband picked up some lilies for one of our planters that had been looking especially sad after several freeze-thaw cycles. I can hear my mom reminding me that I’m supposed to take planters in when it freezes…alas, I do not have her green thumb. I am, however, thrilled that these little guys bloomed with no effort on my part (thanks, God!) and have been absolutely stunning in the Texas sun. They remind me of my wedding bouquet, which had stargazer lilies. Our entire front yard smells amazing due to the lilies. I think I may have found my favorite flower. Don’t be surprised if you find me with a yard full of lilies in a few years. They’re easier than roses, right?

Design Consultation: Pulled Together Mommy

13 Apr

I recently got this request from my dear friend, Emily:

Right now I am looking for easy, but pulled together, spring and summer outfits. I’d love to say I’d wear sundresses all the time, but that’s not happening. I don’t want to be too sporty, which is my tendency with apparel. Also, if I am going to wear shorts, I don’t want them too short… or to look like I am trying to hard. Easy, but pulled together mommy.”

Got it, hot mama! Emily lives in a cooler climate, so we trade being jealous of each other as the seasons change. She also sent me a link to a pair of shoes that she just bought to get me started. I looked for something that would transition easily from spring into summer, be on trend, and reflect her laid back personality. Plus, since Emily’s main concern is her super cute little boy, I went for something quick and easy without long necklaces for him to grab hold of! It doesn’t hurt that these are all items I want for summer and / or already own. I bought a skinny gold belt last winter, and it has been a great purchase! Goes with EVERYTHING! So what do you think? As hot mamas (with or without kids!) yourselves, would you pick up this outfit?
